App Reviews

  • Excellent dictionary

    By RickinLA
When you want the best in dictionaries you can always count on Oxford. This app is no exception. An excellent dictionary that has everything you’ll ever need! There is one thing that happened that has completely baffled me. I created my own “folder” under the Favorites section. I had “favorited” many words and moved them into my folder. I had to shut my iPhoneX down and do a restart. When I went to the Oxford Dictionary the folder I had created “Rick’s Favorites” had disappeared. Along with the many words I had placed in it. Why would a restart wipe out the folder I had created to hold my favorite words? I’ve tried every way I know to recover the folder but to no avail. Hopefully the developer may have an idea of how I should proceed. Hopefully?
  • Disappointed with the most recent update

    By Male User 27
Not a fan of all the updates changing the layout of the app. Personally, I like the original much better. However, the app still served its purpose. The reason I am giving this two stars is because with the most recent update, all of my favorited words were deleted, ALL OF THEM. This is extremely frustrating as I have invested a lot of time adding and developing that extensive list and with one update, it all gets deleted. Seems like whoever manages and administers these updates is more concerned with the superficial aesthetics of the product instead of the functionality and maintaining certain features that kept the consumers using the app. Probably going to transition to Merriam Webster’s app following this update.
  • WAS Better than googling-updated (from 5 stars to 1)

Used to be great app! That’s why I PAID FULL PRICE FOR IT 6 MONTHS AGO. Imagine my frustration when all of the sudden it glitches with an only fix being uninstalling and reinstalling...which COMES WITH SUPER ANNOYING CONSTANT ADDS!!!, the fix? PAY FOR IT AGAIN!!! SAME PRICE! Ripping customers off gets you downgraded in your reviews. That’s not rocket science. When you pay for something you don’t expect to be BILLED FOR IT AGAIN IN A FEW MONTHS! I pay for something (say, a printer) and it conveniently breaks in 2 1/2 years, after the 2 year warranty expires, I do buy another whatever (printer)...but NOT from the same brand. Same principle applies. Dishonesty doesn’t pay in the long run. Sooo...MobiSystems on my “don’t support again” list...along with Brother printers. Ain’t word of mouth enlightening? Rocket science.
  • Oxford English Dictionary

    By D. Hill
The Oxford English Dictionary application is a solid resource for those who want to look up the definition of a word. Along with the meaning users will also receive derivatives of the word such as an adverb or some other example further illustrating the intent of the definition. Users can also save words they like as favorites and access word of the day which can be helpful to broadening one’s vocabulary. The app offers additional features in the premium version such as audio pronunciation but the the standard model does a good enough job for those who just want a mobile dictionary in hand.
  • Don’t upgrade if you PAID for old version! Or you will have to buy a new copy.

    By mumblerX
I’m pretty unhappy that I had a previous paid version that was downgraded when I updated. Now, I need to pay again to get full version and no annoying ads... come on it’s a dictionary, how much has it changed since I bought it that I owe another 20 bucks for basically a new skin on it. Obviously I value a dictionary, as well as the I have extended a extended version on my Computer, as well as printed volumes.
  • This app is garbage and you shouldn't buy it

    By tml_mpls
The original version was great. I actually spent the full $20+ to get the full version believing I was making a good investment and - embarrassingly - spent that again when I inexplicably lost access to the original purchase because I'd gotten such great use from the original. Probably should have seen that as the ominous sign it was and cut my losses, but so it goes. The new version feels like something designed by a child. I do NOT need to see a pop-up asking me to rate the app every time I need to look up a word. So now this is being deleted after 5+ years on the main screen of my phone. Posting this review in the hopes that someone learns from my mistakes. Stay away!
  • A rating because the app bugs for a rating

    By A TechLaw attorney
A coerced review is always less favorable than a voluntary review. The only thing I don’t like about this app is that every time I open it, it flashes a screen asking for a review. It’s a stupid and annoying practice of the insecurity and lack of professionalism of the otherwise most excellent app. I bought the full version without ads. I think the content is accurate and helpful. I use it as a dictionary, and not much for the word games it offers, which are also fun and helpful. But bugging people for a review is annoying and unprofessional. Stop it Oxford!
  • Worth the money

    By Mrbing96
BEST dictionary app out there. As an English literature major, this is the only dictionary we are allowed to cite because of how credible it is. If you love words, want to learn more words or simply need a reliable dictionary (available offline, whenever!), then it’s worth the investment. I got it when they had a $10 sale so you could always wait for that to happen again if you don’t want to fork over the full $20.
  • Yes and No

    By desiringm
While the design of the app and its features are 5 star, even after trying the app, then going away for 6 months, and returning: I find the daily word choice so low brow that I lose respect for the app—and the dictionary. With between 175k and 250k words in the language, could you choose dailies that respect your role as a preeminent reference? When I want to hear language in the mud, I sign onto Facebook. When I turn to the OED, I hope for enlightenment. Please do not appear ashamed of the dictionary’s pedigree or afraid of teaching the (possibly) unknown!
  • Useful and fun

    By Americandude12
Great for usage examples. I use it mainly to look up words whose meaning I already know. Pronunciation feature can be useful. Disappointed that the app did not also carry over from my iPad to my iPhone. I also have a hard copy Oxford English Dictionary that is more extensive but too bulky to use in bed. For anyone who is interested in words, this is the dictionary you want to have.
