I jumped at the chance to listen to more books for less. I have audible and could easily listen to 3-4 books a month, so this seemed like a good choice. Unfortunately, it’s lacking some key features which make Audible so great. For one, they should add the ability to bookmark your location. I often use the sleep timer and it’s frustrating to have to try and find your place again the next morning. Also, the playback is not very smooth even when I have all of the chapters of a book downloaded. For example, in the most recent book I listened to, each “chapter” was short, and was only a part of each book chapter, so every few minutes I’d have to wait a bit while the music played before the next track would start playing. I’d also have to agree with other reviews which say the selection is not up to par with Audible. I don’t mind that I wouldn’t have the downloads forever like with Audible, but do mind that the selection is limited. Overall, it’s an ok app, but without improvements I’ll probably switch back over to Audible.

Love that this is the Netflix of audiobooks. I was discouraged on my few initial searches when I couldn’t find certain books, Jurassic Park and The Haunting of Hill House, to name a couple. Yet, I was able to find new releases fairly easily. The labeling of chapters tends to be a bit confusing. The narrators will say chapter 4, but the app will have the section listed as chapter 21. This may be confusing for people who may use this to listen to books for a class or for a book club. It’s also just, annoying. A feature I wish the app had was a percentage completed. I will know how far I am in a specific chapter, but not the book itself. I won’t know if I’m halfway or near the end. The app isn’t as appealing as other audiobook apps. I often use Libby, which has a very intuitive and friendly interface, with easy access to the book listing, more by the author or publisher, and chapter index. This just has the pause, rewind, and speed. It’s frustrating. Lastly, it’s hard to discover on here. There is an onslaught of classics in nose categories/genres, versus the newer books, despite their availability. It’s easier to just know what you’re looking for and hope for the best. Here’s a question: why is it when I finish an audiobook it remains in my currently listening? A quick tutorial of the app would be nice to have available in settings. It took a couple of days to understand what the check mark was for. Can’t wait to enjoy this app more!
  • Good; poor search & browsing

The application offers a lot for $9.99/month. However, I fear it's suffers from a serious lack of discoverability. Searching by author Returns in complete results. For example, search for "Stephen King" and you only see a fraction of the books that are actually available on the service written by Stephen King. Also, browsing by category only shows a handful of books for each category. Supposedly these are "for you" selections in each of these categories. However there appears to be no way to browse the entire catalog. Another discoverability issue is related to the lack of any type of user ratings of content. If you want to know how good a book is before you start it you'll have to go to another site like Audible or Good Reads. Other issues: - There is no playback sync between. - There is no history of what you have and have not listened to. You can add things to your "library" but it does not show that a book is finished once you've listen to a book. - Every book is broken up by chapter. This wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that each chapter puts a gap with a small musical interlude while the file loads. This can be rather jarring in books with short chapters. - Attempting to airplay an audiobook to my fourth generation Apple TV results in each file skipping to the next repeatedly until the end of the audiobook. This is definitely a bug in this application as no other application on my phone has this problem. Fix it.

The layout is nice I like how it’s been streamlined for quicker viewing and the curated books will help me find some authors I might not have otherwise found. I was excited about the updates to the interface and it was looking good. But still has a few things that will be helpful to improve from the now playing screen. The trouble is that if something goes awry with your book and it skips a chapter, it appears you’d have to go back to the library to find the list of chapters. I tried clicking on the chapter but it didn’t do anything. This was bothersome and very inconvenient it wasn’t until I accidentally scrolled down that I found it. You can remove from your library by selecting the check in the top corner but it’s close to where you’d minimize the now playing screen. Again, inconvenient. Yet with a few more tweaks and this very well could be the best audiobook app in the AppStore.
  • Great app but a few suggestions

I’m an avid reader and often run out of my Audible credits mid month so I will definitely keep this app. I have found some of my favorite authors - Margaret Atwood, Orson Scott Card, Terry Brooks, etc. So clearly I’m a fan but I miss a few things that I rely on when using Audible. I often use my app throughout the day and use a variety of devices to listen on. A way to change the Bluetooth speaker while using the app would be great. I might listen on my phone then transfer to my car speakers then come inside and listen to my home stereo speakers. I can’t do that with this app. Second, I read a lot so I need a folder or a way to distinguish books that I’ve already read from books I plan to read. I can see this being confusing in about a year. So adding a wish list would be great. Any chance you can sort books according to series order or publication. I’m a sci fi but so I’m constantly reading trilogies or series. It would helpful to know which book is which. Also, I hate abridged books. I would love to search and be able to filter out abridged books. There are a few glitches with the playback, repeated chapter headings, etc. But overall - great app. I love it! I’m keeping Audible but I’m also fully committed to hibooks as well. You can’t beat the price. I’m a fan but if these few things can be added, I’ll be very grateful.
  • “The Netflix for audiobooks” is bad marketing

I jumped at the chance to be able to have a service where I could get multiple, newer audiobooks in the month for a little fee. I did not realize that many of those audiobooks are free books available on multiple platforms. I also did not realize that there are levels of access. Of course after I subscribed to the $9.99 per month, the book I wanted to listen to was a “premium” title. The reason why Netflix is successful is because they curate their titles and rotate each month to give people access to even more (new/newish) titles throughout the year. I don’t know if that is the plan with this service, but it is more expensive with less quality titles choose from than I realized when I first signed up. Wishful thinking on my part, unfortunately the value and catalog is not really here.

I would hope to rate this higher but I’m on day 2 of my free trial and have yet to be able to listen to my book. It is still downloading. If there’s something I’m not doing please let me know. I had no trouble downloading on the different book apps that I have. Disappointed! I have now revised this earlier review. I’m not sure what the glitch was but it was resolved and I have downloaded several books since then. They have many many books from authors I love and I am genuinely pleased with hibooks. They responded to my problem both on this review site and also in a email, and in a timely manner. I am thoroughly pleased with this app. And would encourage anyone looking for a good book app to use hibooks. I have a job where I can listen most of the day to my downloads and this site fills the bill. Perfect!!!
  • I don't like Otto radio any more...

I don't like otto radio any more, I was thrilled when I discovered something like this had returned I had dearly missed umano and it's articles and another app. I had that was like pandora only for podcasts and at 1st this was like having them both back only all rolled into one .... I've been thrilled about it!! Wanted to tell anyone and everyone about it!! But lately I've started to fall out of love, almost all my favorite podcasts are NOT being updated anymore, podcasts that are daily and haven't stoped being made and or released , after I tracked them down, that what loved about otto I could listen to all my faves in one place and not have to have a bunch of different apps. to find them or make sure my subscriptions were working properly via iTunes , I could have e It all in one place plus interesting articles all in one place ... I love how I could just skim thru the different sections in the " radio for you " section and hear news articles and news of the day... but not only are my fave podcasts not up dating every thing has changed soo much I don't know what there he'll I'm supposed to do any more and I don't like it or enjoy myself all... I sent a complaint in about my podcasts almost two weeks ago and never got a reply... and sadly deleting and trying to start over only ruined what little enjoyment I had there ... I'm thinking I should just give up...

I really love this app and concept. I have audible but it’s so expensive to buy books on it constantly so I loved this idea since it’s so cheap and unlimited! Love love love the concept but I wish there was a way to see your total progress jn the book.. instead you can only see where you are in that chapter. Not total time listened or total left in entire book. Sometimes it misses my place too and I end up listening to the same thing a couple times. I don’t think they have a book mark feature. I also wish it had more info about the book like how audible has a list of the characters and what not. Also, the chapters are kind of choppy in some books. Definitely recommend though.. I think it’s pretty new so for such a cheap subscription I’m willing to tolerate for now :)
  • (FEATURE SUGGESTION) Almost Perfect!!!

This might be the best podcast app I've ever used, but there is ONE feature that really bugs me while using the app. When you go into your "All New" tab you see the little red dot that says the number of new episodes you have, and it stays there until you have clicked on each UN listened episode. There should be an option to mark an episode as "played" or "listened" because sometimes maybe you've listened to the episode beforehand on a podcast's website or maybe you are not caught up with a certain podcast and seeing the episodes stack up is very annoying and can quickly become useless when you want to know how many episodes you REALLY have to watch at the time. If not "played," then maybe it a "dismiss" button or option. It would make the app a 5 star for me.
