I’m not sure if this is a problem with Hoopla or the library’s it works with but using Hoopla has become almost impossible. I used to listen to audiobooks all the time & was very grateful that I could borrow 8 per month as if I were going to my local library & borrowing from them. Then a few months ago I started getting the message “The daily limit has been reached & will reset at midnight”. It turns out that libraries didn’t like so many books being loaned out & set a limit. This means that A) when I’m ready for a book I usually can’t get one because the limit has been reached (turns out there are a lot of us who like to read or listen-who knew?) B) if I want to be sure to get a book I have to get it at midnight because I’ve tried at all hours of the day & the limit gets reached pretty quickly C) if I do manage to borrow books before that daily limit gets hit I tend to want to borrow my monthly limit of 8 & I hoard books. Which is probably why the limit keeps getting reached so quickly. Others are also hoarding. All this to say I’m extremely frustrated & have stopped using a site I used to love & encourage others to use. I hope someone figures out a way to fix this problem. Otherwise I’ll continue staying away & tell others not to bother. Too much frustration.

I've used Hoopla on many e-books and audibles for well over a year and never had any real problems until I started reading books in a couple of series. The first series book went fine but in the second, some of the pages had black "blocks" on them or some scattered black "pixels." Then pages wouldn't turn. If I closed/relaunched the app, sometimes it would "resume" to my last page and sometime it wouldn't. I've deleted/relaunched the app from the App Store over TWO dozen times and I can't get back to my last page. If I choose "chapter 18" from the index, it asks me if I want to open it, but nothing happens. Twice after reinstalling I have turned individual pages one at a time, trying to get back to chapter 18, but it's stopped at ch 13 and again, the page won't turn either way - my iPad is frozen on that page. My software's uptodate and now I'm wracking my brain, wondering if it might be something in these particular series of books - I'm so frustrated over these problems and the amount of time I've wasted trying to finish these books, I'm halfway ready to just say to hell with it and deal with the lingering frustrating curiosity over the missing chapters and endings of the books I can't read! Grrrr. Not happy.

I can't believe how much I use this app. I'm on it all the time. Be it listening to audiobooks in my car, reading graphic novels on lunch breaks, taking ebooks on vacation, streaming videos at home, it's probably my most used app. It's not without bugs. I've had it lose my place a couple times when listening to audiobooks, though that problem seems to have been fixed with recent updates. It's also been inconsistent when it comes to syncing graphic novels across my devices. Sometimes I can be reading a graphic novel on my iPhone and then pick up my iPad and it will remember where I left off. Other times I can read a graphic novel on one device but it won't let me even download, let alone sync, the item to another device. Bugs aside this app has an intuitive interface, offers a great selection, and items are always available. What's not to love? My main real complaint is that I hardly ever make it into my physical library anymore because this app makes so much available at my fingertip. Great app!

I love this app. I can read all my favorite books wherever I go, and hoopla has a lot of reading choices. But the one thing that downgrades the whole experience by a ton. The borrowing limit. It usually doesn’t bother me when I use apps like overdrive, since I can just finish and return a book, then I can get another one because I have a open space now. But in hoopla, when you return a book, you don’t get an open space to borrow another book. This is a problem for me, since I am a fast and vivid reader. It makes it so that I can see all the books I really want to read in the search engine once I finish the ones I already borrowed but have to wait a month to read them. I mean, if you can somehow avoid copyright lawsuits from book publishers, making the book you want available to you at the second you tap borrow giving you a giant advantage over competitors, how can you not have a return and get another book feature like very other public library ebook borrower! Please remove the limit.
  • Nice library perk

I discovered this app by accident when I saw an insert in one of the DVDs I had borrowed from the library. I have the Roku app as well as the iOS app on my phone and like it a lot. My library only permits 7 items per month and I maxed that out so I’ll need to pace myself next time. I haven’t tried an audiobook yet but chose some music. They have a really good selection, you can listen to entire albums and I made a new discovery the first day. I’m watching a movie on Roku and the streaming quality is very good. With this and the library DVDs I have been able to cancel Netflix and save a few dollars. I like being able to set up my recommendations. The music can be downloaded for offline listening; that worked well in the car with Bluetooth audio. I will be using this app a lot and recommend it; there is something here for everyone. I wish I could keep the selections for a longer length of time, maybe 2 weeks but that is my only criticism.

I think this is my second review but I absolutely LOVE Hoopla! I probably use this app more than any other app on my phone. They have so many options of audio and digital books, as well as music to choose from and all I need is my library card. This is app provides a wonderful, free service, which is almost unheard of in today’s world with all the paid subscription apps. I just can’t say enough positive things about it. I am unable to subscribe to many of the music apps that allow you to download new albums, so I was pretty bummed with not being able to listen to Drake’s new album. However, this morning I get a notification saying that it’s available, and I’m ecstatic! They don’t always have the albums or books I’m looking for but for the most part, they do. I’d say this is definitely an app to have on your phone if you enjoy reading, listening to books or music!
  • Too bad if you don’t like your (free) choices

Hoopla permits four checkouts per month, for members of the library system to which I belong (your library’s contract with Hoopla may have a different number of permitted monthly checkouts). If, after checking out an item you decide you don’t like it, that’s too bad. You don’t get a credit for an early return. Even if you’d only read one page of an ebook, or merely listened to one minute of an audiobook, Hoopla still counts it as one of your monthly borrowings. This is unlike Amazon’s Audible, which will permit returns with credits back. Audible, however, has a monthly charge. So free Hoopla comes at a price, of sorts. The moral of my review? Try to find free excerpts elsewhere before borrowing from Hoopla- or know that regretted choices will mean you’ll find yourself with one less book, audiobook, or audiovisual item to enjoy for the month. So don’t think Hoopla will replace your brick and mortar library, with the opportunity to peruse before checking out. One more complaint. Unlike RBDigital, Hoopla doesn’t offer the capability to enlarge the text of an ebook.
  • The best app!!

I have a fairly long commute to and from work every morning and evening. I’d say between the car, the train and the shuttle ride it takes me about 4 1/2 hours and travel time. When I realize how much time I was spending commuting and not using that time as effectively as possible is when my father recommended this app. I am much more inclined to listen to audiobooks and read anyway so this is the perfect match. I hear everyone talking about this app audible, and I don’t see what all the hype is about. With this you can get five bucks a month free of charge. Well it’s not really free when you consider that it’s tax dollars that are being used to fund it. I read an article saying that the average CEO reads one book a week. If I stay on target I to read one book a year this week. If you don’t have this app yet, get it. Happy reading or listening to all the book lovers out there!
  • Great app, locating problems

Love this app and all the books you could want to read are on it. However it often doesn’t save your place where you were at reading wise and puts you at the start of the chapter again, which is no problem if you were only 3 pages into the chapter but if you are 20 it gets tedious. The bookmarks don’t save at the page either but at the start of the chapter, frustrating if you were marking a passage to reread or chat about later. I wish the scroll at the bottom was total pages in book, not pages left in chapter and let you use that to get to the page you want, similar to nook and kindle setup. Bc otherwise you have to tap on the right each page to get back to your spot if you were in the middle of a chapter. Great app, reminder that the return date is not the end of the month but the date noted under the book. I got surprised the first time, when I was like wait, I wasn’t done-but it had been two weeks.

Both my husband and I are Really enjoying Hoopla! No need to travel for a good free read, audio book, comic book or video! Plus, there are a lot of really good offerings to borrow here that I’m not finding elsewhere. There are a few things about day and month limits, that it’s good to know. You can borrow 5 items at a time. Books loan for 21 days; videos 72 hrs. Each library has a daily loan cap...I’m not sure if that’s per a particular item, or if it’s a cap on a cumulative total of loans per day in general. There is also a general per month cap...so get your good movies and books early in the day and before the monthly cap (whatever it is for your particular library) runs out. I’ve only been using Hoopla for a few weeks now, but I’m thrilled with this app and with this public service and find myself telling my family and friends about it in excited tones. :)
