App Reviews

  • Good Sh... Stuff! Kinda...

It does what I needed to do, looks nice, and functions as well as the PS3-version of the app. More than satisfied when watching on the device that launched the app. The functionality with Chromecast, however, is quite poor. 1. Why is the little carrot-arrow the ONLY part of the minimized controls that will maximize to the full control screen? 2. Why do items that are hidden or obstructed visually by the minimized control bar, seem to always have touch preference? I tap any of the mini controls, especially that nearly untappable carrot-arrow, and the app starts playing whatever happened to be underneath. And, when that happens, what I was trying to watch is not available under "continue watching", so I must find it again; restarting from the beginning. 3. Why do the 10-second skip controls persist while casting? Have you ever used other casting apps? The rest convert their 10-second skip controls to 30-second skip when casting. Every control executes after a buffering delay, except pause and (resume) play. So, it takes about 5 seconds to execute a 10-second skip OR a 30-second skip. To put it in perspective, a 30-second skip would be equally frustrating if it takes 15 seconds to execute. And, if a 10-second skip takes 15 seconds to execute, your app should either have a drug habit, or be traveling near the speed of causality (a.k.a. the speed of light).

Crappy app. For starters the login process is lengthy and redundant. Why do I need to go on a web browser to log into an APP??? Secondly you can’t add entire series to your Watchlist. However you can add individual episodes. But who is going to start off a series and take the time to add 80 episodes to your Watchlist?! Then continue to do that every time you start a new series. Do you even want us to watch your content??? Meaning you have to do a search for the show every time you open the app. What’s the point in even having a Watchlist? Very annoying. It should also be noted once you finish the individual episode you tediously added to your Watchlist, it doesn’t disappear on it’s own. You have to manually delete it, but WAIT, you can’t delete them individually... you can only clear them all at once. Don’t get me wrong... the quality of the movies and shows are great. App has never crashed on me. But that being said... HBO... do better. & hire a better developer.
  • Terrible and nearly useless on devices

    By Uwnate
This app is an embarrassment (similarly to the showtime anytime app). The navigation is cumbersome and tedious, but the worst thing is that on devices like iPad or my Xbox one, if you don't use it for a few days, it logs you out and you have to go through the ridiculously stupid process of signing in and activating it again. And to do that you have to choose your cable provider...and it only LISTS every provider so you have to scroll through them all to find yours. It does NOT let you search for your provider. HBO I know you have money and I know you could throw a bone to the app developers to fix this electronic rubbish you pass for an app. This app is a digital representation of the laziness of the company and the shear disdain HBO truly has for their customers. If I didn't automatically get HBO through my building, I would never pay for this garbage. I'm sure no one from the company will read this, but I hope potential customers do, and run the other way. Do not give them your money!!
  • The most frustrating.

Aside from being a horribly difficult app to navigate, it has an even more infuriating feature!! Are you streaming on your mobile device? Did someone just call you while you were watching a show? Well you better have been paying attention to your progression in the episode because once you open the app back up again it has no idea who you are or what you were previously doing. Sign back in (probably 7 times before it works) and then manually search for the show you WERE JUST WATCHING, then fast forward to where you think you were (and hope the app doesn’t tell you there was an error processing your request), then watch the loading dots for about 2 minutes before the show starts again. And if you were not at the correct place, hitting the +/- 10 second Button will cause the app to think for 53 seconds so you are better off just re watching what you have already seen SINCE ITS FASTER. LITERALLY THE WORST APP I HAVE EVER USED.
  • HBO phoning it in...

    By Whoopmeister
HBO Go is a half baked attempt at making a mobile app so some overpaid executive can say “we have a mobile app” and nothing more. The iPad version of the HBO Go app lacks even basic search functionality severely limiting the content you can access. This means that you can only access the titles they put in the section scrolls and banner. Good luck watching some of the acclaimed older series such as The Sopranos. Thye have a section to view classics, but those work intermittently at best, more often than not they display no content at all, especially under iOS 11. To make matters worse the “watchlist” function that is present in the Roku and SmartTV versions of the application is curiously absent making it extremely tedious to pick up where you left off in the living room, if you even can find the show you were watching to begin with. With all the resources available to HBO, this sad excuse for an app is ridiculous. I am guessing the CMO got their bonus anyway though. Pathetic.
  • Updated as of June 1: Casting completely broken

    By brangelo
Update (June 1): After updating, chromecast functionality has been fixed and I am a happy camper, on to the Silicon Valley marathon. Chromecast functionality is completely broken, every time I try and connect, about 50% of the time it works, and the other 50% of the time it crashes and isn't able to connect at all. And then, in the short list of times it does connect, as soon as you leave the app to go view something else on your phone, the button functionality completely breaks and I can't even stop the episode I'm watching, let alone change it to continue the series I'm watching. Come on guys, please fix this.

This app worked great until this last update. I have 2 iPads and 2 iPhones and the new update won’t work on any of them. I have uninstalled and re-installed twice now. All I get on all 4 devices is a Service Error message that says “An error has occurred. HBO GO will now restart.” And when it does, of course I keep getting the same Service Error message. Lest anyone think this is a problem with my service provider, every other app on all 4 devices work perfectly, including all other video streaming services. HEY HBO! Why don’t you do your own beta testing before releasing such garbage upon an unsuspecting public? You need to correct this immediately before people like me cancel their subscriptions and move to Stars. I loved this app, but I give the current version 1 star, but only because the site requires at least a 1 star rating. But understand it is merely a “pity rating.”

I consider myself a pretty patient, reasonable person, and this app literally gives me rage. I know without a shadow of a doubt that I have HBO on my directv account, and that my login information is correct, and it consistently makes me enter my information 20+ times before finally allowing me to log in. I've closed and opened the app, uninstalled and reinstalled it, cleared settings, and tried putting in the password at various times (e.g., through the menu, when promoted when selecting a show to view), and I cannot log in without endless attempts until the app finally decides oh *this* time we'll let you in. And once logged in, this is the glitchiest, buggiest app I have ever used. Once a show is started, there is no hope of pausing or rewinding (even though that functionality is meant to be there), and it often crashes for no apparent reason. PLEASE, HBO, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, FIX YOUR APP.
  • Simply amazing

    By hairbrained86
I use this app all the time!! I love hbo and honestly basic cable tv seems so “basic”. I haven’t had regular cable in years nor do I want a contract or huge box taking away from the minimalist ascetic of my home! I now have Direct Tv Now that comes with HBO free !! Allowing me to log into these apps and watch live hbo channels. I’m shocked to see such negative reviews as I use this app daily with no problems ! GoT, West World, silicone valley, vice principals, VICE, high maintenance ( shorts and the hbo series ), 3c off Documentary , Scientology doc, Kurt kobain doc are just a few of the amazing shows I get to watch again and again from any portable media device I have anywhere I go !

This app was pretty sad when I first downloaded it but after the last update it's showing promise. I used to have to keep it open and make it so my phone didn't lock to keep using the controls to pause, etc. Now I can text someone and come back to the app and still pause what I'm watching. Like someone said prior, the continue watching feature, is a bit sketchy but you are moving in the right direction HBO. I have to say it was surprising a company such as yourself, put out such a terrible app to begin with. I've been watching innovative shows on HBO for decades I expected a lot more. Please extend your innovation to all your products.
