App Reviews

  • App freezes on start screen

I can't use the app any more, although I would. It stops 3/4ths through the splash screen and freezes. I hope they are working on this. The app won't load at all in airplane mode. Crashes immediately. Tried to remove and re-download...also restarted my phone. Still same splash screen fail. If it ever gets fixed, I also don't like that I have to flip through a screen and scroll a view just to get to the podcasts. I also wish the podcasts were in release order than by day, hr1, 2,3...hard to find out what is next to hear when missing a couple days and trying to catch up. There should be some indication that a podcast was played. Also, if I leave the app for a day, and was in the middle of a podcast, the app restarts and I end up flipping through the list trying to figure out where I left off. Takes too long. You should keep track of what is currently being listened to(plus where it last left off, and return to that place). The reload-refresh is terrible because of this. Poor user experience because of this. I know you want to pass new stuff as soon as it's available, but it shouldn't be at the expense of returning to where you left off. This must improve.

The new app works fine for me after an initial hiccup: Having to enable cellular data streaming in the app is unnecessary and took me reading reviews here to figure out what was going on after a day of frustration. I see no reason for this redundancy. Cellular streaming should be enabled/disabled from the phone settings and that’s it! Other than that, I love the new look and it works quite well for me. I like being able to both stream shows and individual sound bytes. Rush has a lot of talking points and having to not wade through hours of show to find the clip I want is so helpful when replaying for friends in conversations and such. They do a good job of putting the individual stuff separate for the bigger talking points. I also like that the sound quality is a lot better than my local AM affiliate. I find myself using the app even when I can listen on the radio. I look forward to a future update without the redundant cellular streaming issue. I know I’m not the only one who finds this annoying. Other than that, good work.
  • About time!

It’s about time an update at last! It looks great, but the most basic of functions is not there - PLEASE, provide working fast forward and reverse options! I give this app 1 star for updating, but only 2 stars because of the lack of fast forward issue. PLEASE don’t wait three years to fix this.:) Update: it is nice that we can send comments and get responses - but the issues are not fixed! So, if you use the app because you are a paid subscriber and want to listen to the podcasts without ads - forget this app. You can’t fast forward through the ads (which are several minutes long) since the blue dot for forwarding is useless. Better to download a pod catcher like RSS radio and deal with that. I agree with others that this app is way too cluttered and basically useless for listening to the show. The other material in the app is already on the website - why duplicate? I’m really puzzled why a self-proclaimed tech guy like Rush would be ok with this non-functioning app - sad the update is pointless, the previous app, those loaded with issues, was better. Here is my suggestion: offer an app to paid subscribers that contains just the show audio and video - keep it simple!

I have listened to Rush brag about how great his new app etc and I cant help but wish I never even updated. I use this app to listen to the show audio during my commute, and with the new app this process was made more difficult as I now have to scroll around to find the audio which is buried under a bunch of videos and random sound bites. Also with this update, I lost the functionality to fast forward or rewind using my car audio controls. Using the slider in the app never works, and is not suggested while driving. Sometimes I open the app to only discover that the latest audio file is days old and have to reboot the app to get the latest. Finally, today I can’t get past the loading screen to even listen to the show. And let’s not forget the first few days the app was out where they told me my phone didn’t have cell enabled as they defaulted the setting to off and you had to randomly dig through the app to toggle cell data on, with no instruction pointing you there. If I wanted to deactivate cellular for this app, I would do it through the phone settings, not this broken app! Bring back the old app!

Rush, I love you and love your show. I’ve been listening since 1993. I, too, am an Apple guy and an iPhone guy. This new app is bitterly disappointing; I can’t sugar coat it. You, too should be disappointed. I echo all of the laundry-list technical company jaunts you have been hearing. This app makes it difficult and frustrating to simply listen to the show, which is all I really care about and why I am a Rush 24/7 subscriber. Please figure it out and fix the app. It is not up to your high standard at all. Please make it so I can DOWNLOAD the show; that is what truly constitutes a PODCAST. Streaming your show while tethered to your website (requiring internet access) is NOT a podcast. That is called streaming. Please don’t insult our intelligence by referring to this frustrating procedure as a “podcast” because you know better. BTW, as of today on my iPhone 6+ with iOS 12.1.5 installed, I am UNABLE to open the app. Same on my iPad mini. Tried deleting the app and now it won’t re-install. Please get it together, Rush. I’m embarrassed for you.

You guys got it right this time. We’ve been waiting patiently for the enhanced audio player with the ability to skip back/forward 15 sec (though who wants to skip forward on this show?). Digging the podcast feature. I’ve never been able to use podcasts as I listen to the first half of today’s show on my way home from work and the other half on my way to work the next morning. I use a company laptop and they won’t allow us to install iTunes. In the past — no iTunes, no podcasts. Now we can download them directly from the app. I primarily use the streaming feature. I enjoy the over-the-air format with the bumper music and the little gems Rush slips in while cutting to obscene profit breaks. Your “Rush 24/7” membership cuts out the ads and whittles each hour down to a tidy 38:50 minutes. The podcasts save you an additional two minutes per hour by cutting out pretty much all of the bumper music. But again, Rush sometimes slips in some doozies while that bumper music is playing and frankly, I enjoy the selection. Not sure whether I can attribute this to the updated app or iOS 11.4, but I was having serious compatibility issues with the previous version of this app and the audio system in my car. Those issues seem to be resolved. Thank you. Great job!
  • Used to be the worst podcast app ever

Edited 5/31- Leaving the writeup below but today they dropped an update and FIXED everything i whined about! The podcasts are available offline, etc. etc. MAJOR improvement. Ive always used the Apple podcast app because frankly the Rush app has never been good. Recently Rush podcasts became unavailable via 3rd party podcast apps (I was using Castbox) so I am now forced to use this app. There is nothing good or even ok about this app. It can’t download and store a podcast for offline listening, it cant automatically move to the next episode, it cant remember where you left off. You are forced to stream and it does a poor job doing that. I love Rush but if this isn’t fixed by the time my renewal is up, i wont be renewing my subscription. Its hard to fathom how this app was released being so bad considering Rush has always been on the cutting edge of Apple tech. As Trump would say...Sad.
  • Overrated for what it is

I’m a 24/7 subscriber that I primarily use for the podcasts because it’s impossible to find anything on the website with its silly iPhone-looking navigation menu. That hasn’t improved and this app hasn’t helped either. The one thing most podcast listeners want is the ability to control the rate of playback to maximize our time. And the fact that Rush speaks slowly makes this feature a must. I can’t find the daily news stories he refers to in this app although they’re somewhere on the website if you look hard enough. Maybe they’re in the app if you hunt hard enough but you shouldn’t need to. And finally, not all of us have the time to watch videos all day so the ability to read stories and bypass the videos quickly would be appreciated. But mostly I’d settle for a speed control, but tbh I don’t know if it would drag me away from Downcast or not. The lack thereof certain doesn’t help.
  • I want this to be good but it is not.

I feel bad giving this such a bad review but nothing else is reasonable. I hoped the major overhaul would fix it but while it certainly is a very good looking app now, the functionality is awful. The main use of this app is to listen to the show while it isn’t live, and the media player is the worst. I can scrub forward reliably but not precisely, but there is no way at all to scrub backward while listening to the show. It is unlikely to remember my place if I pause the show for awhile, and if I miss a few seconds or want to hear something again or find my place, there are no controls for skipping forward or backward a few seconds (and again skipping backward doesn’t work at all). The show has by far the best content, but I guess I’m back to going to he Podcast section of the website in Safari on iOS, or when I can downloading the podcast and putting it in iTunes as an audiobook. Then I can skip forward, backward, and even adjust playback speed.
  • Needs Reliability Improvements

The app frequently freezes and loses track of where I was in a podcast if I’m driving through an area with a weak cell signal and buffering is required, or if I get a phone call. This is highly annoying when driving down the road, and the scrolling bar generally doesn’t work which is even more frustrating when I’m trying to find where I left off. Often times the newest show audio episodes don’t show up right away in the list, there’ll only be ones that are 3 days old or so until I close and reopen the app a few times. Also, 15 second replay/forward buttons would be a great addition. Please fix these issues and my review of the app will be changed to 5 stars.
