App Reviews

  • App with identity crisis

    By Bob Kerstetter
Crunchyroll publishes awesome anime. But the app has an identity crisis. Login with a paid subscriber account and everything works great. Five stars. Seriously. It is very well done. But — and this is huge — not everyone can afford the monthly fees and the execution of the advertising ruins the app. No stars. Crunchyroll needs the advertising to fund the delivery of no-cost anime to its free subscribers. It is the TV broadcasting business model. No problem. But the technology used to insert the ads fails to match the quality of the overall app. The ads lock up the app. They also repeat themselves three times in a row in the same ad break. And while the ads are supposed to be targeted to the interests of the viewers, they are not. If Crunchyroll could get the advertising to work correctly, advertising could possibly make more money per user than paid subscriptions. Determining the interests of viewers is pretty easy. You just ask them. Do interesting ads and people will click them. Streaming technology is good enough to never lock up an app. And never repeat ads during the same break. I will never buy a Volvo no matter how many times you run the ad. I'm a Subaru guy. You should already know that. Have Subaru tell me about its awesome technology and I will click the ad to find out more info. Everyone wins — Crunchyroll, advertisers and anime fans. Fix it please.
  • Up front review

So I’m not going to talk about ads because I've been premium for about 2 years now. If you don’t like ads get premium. It’s 6.99 a month I’m sure you spend that when you go to a fast food restaurant. I’ll talk about the interface, ease of use and how it handles peak time. So I’m giving 4 stars because it’s a good app to watch anime. I use the app about 4x times a week and of those 4 uses 2 I’d say are during peak days (Saturday and Sunday). Since the recent updates I only experienced bad connection a few times and it’s usually Saturday night when dragon ball super simulcast is going on. Somewhat annoyed I wait until the next day cause the entire app was shutdown and of no use. However the few bad times do not outweigh the countless hours of anime I’ve enjoyed over the years. I love that I can have a queue and it keeps track of where I leave off. I love the dark theme interface cause it’s easy on my eyes. I also enjoy that it shows the season we’re currently in and the period seasons for simulcast anime. It even has Korean drama tv which my wife loves. Also as a premium member you’re able to gift a free membership every month to another person. Overall great app.
  • Fun with settings

    By Lalafells r us
I use this app almost every day. I admit I may have an addiction to anime my apologies if I seem biased. I have found so many good anime in this app, the only draw back is the paid subscription that takes away ads. It's 6.99 a month but I believe it's worth it. I have been a premium member for over a year now and I find that it's much easier to just pay the full years worth up front cause it's about the cost of a new video game instead of paying every month which is troublesome, annoying and also costs more. But all in all I think that if your willing to put in the cash for a year you will be extremely satisfied. Also on another note be sure to look closely at the settings due to the fact that there is a setting that allows you to enable or disable mature content. If enabled there should be a more variety of anime that will show on the anime list.(this has been my experience and they may have changed things since this post.) But all in all great app worth the money if you aren't afraid of the sticker price. And most importantly, enjoy the wonders, fun, excitement, and often times heart jerking tear fests that is anime!
  • No support?

This service has the potential to be really awesome. I tried the free trial and started watching right away and ended up keeping the subscription for premium going. There are some annoyances such as when I try to fast forward through intros It can sometimes take 3-5 minutes to even play the show again and it usually happens multiple times. My biggest issue though, and reason for 2 stars is that I was having an issue where my password was not working when trying to sign in on my other devices. When I tried to reset password, the link never came. I tried multiple times a day to reset and yes I checked spam and every folder but nothing. I reached out to customer service which got back to me quickly but they said that I have no account with them yet I’m being billed for premium. They escalated the issue but I never heard back and this was almost 2 weeks ago. I’ve sent another help request and haven’t heard back at all. For some reason now I’m able to sign in with my password to other devices but my premium account status is gone yet I’m still paying for the subscription. I’ve even tried unsubscribing and subscribing and issue persists. This has really become annoying and I’d love to give more stars and continue service if they could resolve my issue!

If you guys are going to put stuff that may have many other episodes or movies or whatever you should put them all. Like black butler for instance. Pretty sure there is a book of Atlantic, you should put that and there is black butler in wonderland or Ciel in wonderland but that should be added too. Asking the sailor moon series I know for a fact that the sailor moon on there now is the new version I can tell by how she transforms, I think the other sailor moon movies or episodes should be on here as well. I could tell by the transformation as I recal her arm never looked like spaghetti and they never changed into sailor senshi like that. Also there should be less ads! There is constantly so many ad pop ups it drives me nuts! Instead of about 25 ads you should put like maybe 5 or 6 or even give them a choice or something. Bc not everyone wants to be watching there favorite anime and then a super juicy part comes on then BOOM! An ad pops up. Not a very good thing now is it? You might get lower ratings but I still think this is a gr8 app! But there does need to be some stuff fixed but other than those things this is a totally cool app.
  • It freezes and then when you reopen it you have to sit through 3-4 ads

Ok so I love anime and I understand that you guys need the money to not only pay your employees but also to support the anime creators, which I really respect, but the least you could do is to make your posted episodes run smoothly! I love the quality of the content (pixels and all that) but whenever I rewind the anime with the 10 seconds back button, it freezes and I have to exit out and click on it again. Here’s my issue with that: I have to sit through watching the same stupid long ads (3-5 depending on length and then sometimes more cause it doesn’t start where I left off or it’s about to hit another series of ads so sometimes 6-10 ads!!) so I can rewatch a small scene cause it went too fast to read. At least make it so that if you’ve already watched the ads up till that point, that you don’t have to watch then all over again for reloading the episode!! Ugh!! This is so frustrating. This is why those websites that give your device tons of viruses and have lower quality and tons of side-ads are so popular nowadays! At least you don’t have to wait for the ads for that long and there’s only one or two in the beginning only.
  • Ads

    By Just-A-Human
So I don’t mind ads in small quantities. I wouldn’t have a problem if we got three to even four ads per episode, “per episode” being the key terms here. But that’s not the case. Instead, we have to suffer through four to six ads every eight or so minutes at their designated tick marks. To make matters worse, if for some reason the episode is not working and we have to leave and come back, clicking on the same episode results in you having to watch another six ads just to get back into it. Yes, I understand that Crunchyroll has to support themselves some way, but is this really necessary? Considering the amount of people who frequent the app and binge anime like I do, I think three ads per episode would be a more reasonable amount. Having to sit through six ads every ~eight minutes really kills the viewing experience for me, especially when I’m invested in a show. Maybe if we only had to watch four ads in one sitting at the beginning it would be more tolerable. Everything considered, it’s more convenient to get your anime on a free site like Kissanime (that sometimes doesn’t even work anyway) then sit around for the amount of ads that this app shoves down your throat.
  • Wait for episodes after they come out

    By Sir Boxington williams
So a thing I’ve noticed is that when a new episode comes out, you have to wait a solid week. An entire week to watch a single episode that is riddled with tons of ads, the ads I’m fine with but it’s the time that they have made for this and even if you try to use the free trial they charge you right after seven days. It’s not really a “free trial” if your going to need credit card info now I’m aware this means you could create alternative accounts and get unlimited trial access so there’s that. But you can’t see the IP of where an email address came? And if more than one account was created from that IP. I mean sure I guess they need their money to let anime on their streaming platform, but the fact that you MUST wait a week is just ridiculous. Not only do I want to watch that episode but I can’t it sits there and taunts me with that gold crown. Another thing I want to address is the whole youtuber promotion free trial is the same exact thing as the free trial, no credit card no trial. Even though this whole rant of mine won’t change a corporate giant worth well over hundreds of millions of dollars, even the smallest response is all that matters.
  • Eh..

I think the app is great and all, but there are some tweaks. The first one is the pause button. Half the time I can’t pause the video to read something because it’s a loading circle-thing. So, I miss the moment, cause me to have to press the 10 sec. back or forward button, but then an ad-attack happens, which brings me to my next complaint. I can’t really call this a anime show app for Japan’s best hits because of all the ads. It seems like it’s a free ad show. Now, I know you can buy the premium, which gets you no ads, but, do we look like trillionares? (I mean come on, we bought this app to watch FREE shows, jeez!) Also, why doesn’t the ad have a pause option? You may need to do something in your household or your parents called you to do stuff, and are we supposed to bring your device with you while it’s playing a whole bunch of ads? And if you leave it, the show will play without you knowing, and if you go to far back cause you missed to much, ATTACK ON AD TITAN! If they had these shows on satellite it would probably have WAY less commercials/ad breaks. Either way, it’s great and I’m really enjoying Miss Kobayashi's dragon maid. Thanks, please fix though....
  • Terrible !!!

    By @tonie
Absolutely terrible. I only purchased this app to support anime. The app worked great on my Apple TV last year and on my IPhone. But over the last few months, the app has been absolutely terrible.. I’ve probably seen more commercials then I’ve seen anime. There’s constant buffering and freezing. Once a show starts don’t you dare touch a button, you’ll be looking at another few minutes of buffering, plus commercials.. Their slow servers totally kill any momentum the show your watching has built. So I upgraded to premium to see if it would help. Well it didn’t ! Same problems. I’m so disappointed. I said o well , it’s only 6.99 and I’m doing a good thing by supporting the anime community. But the problems are so consistent, that they can’t be ignored. The service their providing consistently ruins the positive feelings that i have each and every week, when I go to it to watch a new episode of my favorite show. Enough is enough. I’ve given Crunchyroll to many chances. I’d rather go back to streaming my favorite show illegally. At least it won’t be interrupted by commercials or buffering, and it will not cost me anything. Crunchyroll has potential but for right now it’s not for me.. I’ll check back in the future to see if they’ve gotten their crap in order.
