About This is Not a Game by Sam Bee

Developer Description

Samantha Bee wants to get you excited about the 2018 midterm elections in the best way possible: a daily trivia game with a cash prize of up to $5,000! And don’t worry, the game isn’t rigged; it’s for everyone! We don’t care if you’re Republican, Democrat, Green Party, or Gary Johnson, we just want you to get excited about voting. Once per day, you’ll get the chance to answer 10 multiple choice questions about the midterms, current events and very important facts about democracy like in what 1980’s vampire movie Kiefer Sutherland played POTUS. Get every question right and you’ll win cash from the daily jackpot, split with the other winners (#winning)! Get every question wrong and you probably don’t know anything about the United States, so we’re glad you’re here. How it works: * Join the game every day when you get a push notification * Answer 10 funny trivia questions while the clock counts down! * Win real cash by answering all 10 questions right. * Winners split the daily jackpot of $1K to $5K—and sometimes more! * Got a question wrong? Embarrassing—but you can keep playing to win if you have extra lives. * No lives left? Now you're in Dead Mode. You won't be able to win today's prize, but answer correctly to earn lives for the next game. * Get bonus lives by signing up for election reminders, inviting friends, and completing weekly challenges. If only a political comeback were that easy! Why did Full Frontal make this game? To get people excited about the midterms, maybe even excited enough that they’ll go out and vote! America's typical midterm election turnout SUCKS and we are 100% certain this game will solve everything. We want America to learn facts, register to vote, and get involved in the U.S. election process. Isn’t that beautiful? Don’t answer. We know it is. All civic-minded people are required by law to play the game for a chance to win a cash prize. Non-civic-minded people are also encouraged to play. See you in the game!

  • Fun and frustrating at the same time...

I have thoroughly enjoyed taking the quizzes each day, although 6:00 sometimes kept me from playing due to dinner plans. I share with many others the frustration of late loading questions with limited time to answer and once I’d answered 3 correctly and it sent me into dead mode...I WAS NOT HAPPY...but for the most part, the game ran okay and I missed because of some tooky little trivial question. One thing that did frustrate me was the extra life challenges in the bonus section....I wasn’t able to get some of them to work. I would click on the find Your voting place and get a voting reminder, but it wouldn’t allow me to do it. It just stayed on the same page. But...even with the glitches..it was lots of fun. I’ll miss doing this at 6:00 each day. I am old and I always vote, but I do hope this helped build awareness for the importance of voting. I won three times and I felt very pleased with myself! Thanks Samantha Bee and I hope you’ll do this again in 2020!
  • One question had huge impact, plus overall great game

So the serious moment first — about an extremely smart, strategic question/answer that had a huge impact on me. The topic was voter suppression, and, without warning, there wasn’t an answer or solution for one question. For a very little bit of time — with the clock ticking so quickly — I felt the panic and frustration of having no solution. I’ve intellectually sympathized and thought I knew how voter suppression felt. I was wrong. It isn’t a game when all options are cut off. I felt a visceral outrage while thinking “this isn’t right! There’s no answer! This isn’t fair!” The moment will stay with me forever. I’m still light years from appreciating full realities, but what a punch in the gut... In the midst of fun questions, great humor, and helpful information, one question stopped me in my tracks: you’re right, Samantha Bee, the game is NOT a game. Thank you forever.

Samantha - sorry but sorry won’t do! People will lose interest in the game and you defeat the purpose of getting people to vote if they keep playing and all they get every time is you lose. Even with no money or prize give people something they can WIN!!! Only a certified masochist would like this game. Sorry but I need to give this a one star. My hope is that the people who worked on it will realize the issues and fix them. It is VERY frustrating to only be able to do anything with the app once a day at 5:00, and for that once a day you get peppered with questions that start easy but by the end are extremely hard. Most people will probably lose given the way the game is set up. When you lose repeatedly, you give up. This game is going to reinforce people just giving up. You can have the 5:00pm game be the one for money, but supplement it with other games that can be played just for fun. Use prior day’s quizzes to help people understand what to expect. I support what you are doing, but I’m ready to just hit delete on the app. It’s too aggravating.
  • Fun, but by God is it broken

The concept by itself is great. I love Sam Bee, I love her sense of humor, I love any app that sees civic engagement as one of its goals. The problem lies with the execution. The game notifications just don’t work. I’ve played this game 5 times and in all but one did I stumble on a game breaking glitch. Questions and answers won’t load and even when they do they often load late and give you very little time to actually think about the answer. Sometimes the screen freezes and won’t let you choose an answer. Even Dead Mode (the game’s way of allowing you to continue competing for extra lives even after you’ve lost, which is, again, a great idea in theory) often doesn’t correctly keep track of the amount of lives you should be earning. This is a terrific idea. And it’s trying to do some good in the world, which is more than I can say for a lot of apps and games. I just hope they can have it up and running at a proper pace before November.
  • Great Idea! Love this & Learning Too

Such a great concept. I know on rollout there were a few bugs...like game is in play, you could be punching your mobile device (the right answer of course), yet nothing would register and of course....dead mode might or might not appear. Yet, it got better! I could play on iPad or phone, with notifications coming in (cause you know 6pm EST news starts breaking at break neck speed! Whiplash of the senses!!) The only thing that has knocked me out or causes my game to freeze is a phone call coming in. Or when the game players starts to creep near max audience...servers can only handle so much right? Wa wa....dead mode.... I keep playing if I can. I’m nuts like that. I do wish we could earn bonus lives a little more frequently. That being said, BRAVA to you and crew for an ingenious way of schooling folks (in the funniest, kindness way possible of course), it’s been funny to quickly choose a answer only to realize DOH! Wrong!! should have gone with gut and the one you knew was it, but second guessed yourself. Just like taking a test at school ..back in the Stone Age 😉 I would kindly make a suggestion, even for those of us with a few cents in our banks, a way to donate that ..... rather than cash out ..... DONATE! There are so many issues, people, groups, places in need of funding...a few cents adds up - right? Just a thought.
  • Talk about “rigged”

Like many other people who have reviewed this game, I really, really wanted to like it and it still could have great promise but it is impossible to play! Questions don’t load or they load and then you’re not allowed to select an answer and the clock runs out before you can even finish reading the question. Even in dead mode it makes mistakes and doesn’t let you keep going. I answer a question correctly but it often times out before accepting the response. I am really curious about the people who do win and I wonder if they are all out east with some super powerful server on their network that has the highest speed Internet known to man? Also, why at the end of the game when they split up the prize money are there people on the list with much higher amounts than others? If the average winnings for the day are around $7 how are there some people with 10 times that amount showing? I don’t think Samantha Bee would ever rig a game but it does make me wonder if some hackers have found a way to get in?

People from outside the US are whining about not being able to use. Besides the whole point it was created for (getting Americans to become more civically engaged)...Because there’s actual money available to win, I’m guessing it’s limited to those playing within the US (etc etc) — the problem is, it doesn’t SAY that anywhere. (I’m fine with that; if I can’t sign up for promotions in other countries, I don’t think people from other countries should be able to sign up for ours; sorry — it’s just the way things work IMO. ; the day that an American citizen living abroad can come up with a solution around all that — and how to market their solution to app developers, I’d be all for whatever that process is, so long as it actually WORKS. Till then... sorry / not sorry 😬)
  • Fun & Informative, most bugs gone

Anyone who tried the game from Day 1 knows we overloaded the app & it crashed. That happens. The app continued to have issues, but most have been fixed EXCEPT ONE: I don’t get a notification before a game is about to begin & yes, I checked all my settings. I set an alarm for 10 min before the usual 6pm ET but not every game is at 6 & few ppl are going to go that far. As for the game itself: it’s a lot of fun! It has the same irreverent satire of the Full Frontal show. Some of the questions are obvious (to me) and some are really challenging. A good mix. I just finally won my first game today. I’ll tell ya, you won’t get rich, but you’ll learn something each game & definitely it’s a great way to see what I know about the issues & get a laugh as we wait nervously for Election Day. I hope the app stays after Election Day is over.
  • Gotta be better

I love Sam B and the idea of this app but it’s gotta get better fast. I have yet to lose a game solely because I don’t know the answer. It either is late or straight up doesn’t show the question or answers about have the time and when it does I can’t rely on it to actually let me answer. I get that I can only play at a certain time of day or it won’t work but if I’m gonna give something that kind of time commitment/scheduling time it’s gotta actually work. Also you would get more people if you could figure out a way for people to play any time within say and hour and then calculate how many people win. I know way too many people that can’t play based on when the game is. And I think it being “live” is probably why it crashes so often. I don’t know I want to keep using it but it’s only been a week and I’m already pretty disillusioned to it.

    * For the sake of old people like myself that have to struggle in situations where reaction time, reading speed, and recall take a little longer, please think about SLOWING IT DOWN, just a bit, please! The interval allowed to read and answer questions is way too short for senior citizens and we’ve been good voters for decades! (I voted for McGovern for my first Presidential!). When the correct answer is D I often miss it because I haven’t read that far yet! *In addition, please change the music. It is truly obnoxious. * If you are trying to persuade people to vote and learn about the issues and vote, why not have the questions relate more to issues that matter to more people? For example, questions about the structure of government, or what the senate and congress actually do, or questions about the Federal and Supreme Courts, the forth estate, etc. Or, maybe Qs about national current events? It seemed like a lot of the questions were about largely irrelevant or esoteric factoids. * Otherwise, I applaud your endeavor; you are wonderful and creative and smart and funny and beautiful. Thank you! I finally won one today!
